Introduction

The health and fitness industry is a large and important component of part of the Active Leisure and Learning Sector. It is made up of both privately run clubs such as David Lloyd, Fitness First and Cannons, and publicly run gyms through various leisure facilities run by local authorities or leisure trusts.

On the Intermediate Level Apprenticeship you could work as a Fitness Instructor or Gym Instructor, responsible for the maintenance of the gym, developing session plans and delivering sessions for members. It may also include reception duties and increasing membership sales. You could also work as an Exercise Instructor, working with children and adults, preparing, delivering and evaluating exercise sessions, such as aerobics, step aerobics, circuit training, and aqua aerobics.

Entry Requirements

Learners should be employed for 30+ hours per week in a gym environment and should be undertaking work which satisfies that criteria of the qualification.

Maths and English at GCSE A*-C, Level 2 Functional skills or Level 2 Key Skills are not required but if held, will exempt the learner from these elements of the Apprenticeship framework.

Course Structure

The Diploma in Instructing Exercise and Fitness includes:

  • Competency in the vocational area
  • Personal Learning and Thinking skills
  • Employee Rights and Responsibilities

The Diploma in Active Leisure includes:

  • Knowledge of the vocational area

If applicable, learners will also work towards:

  • Level 1/2 Functional Skills in English
  • Level 1/2 Functional Skills in Maths

Assessment Methods

Assessment for the Diploma in Instructing Exercise and Fitness and the Diploma in Active Leisure will mainly take place in the work environment. Some workshops may need to be attended to gain some knowledge towards the Diploma in Active Leisure.

An assigned assessor will visit the learner once a month for 1-2 hours in order to assess competency and knowledge in the vocational area. 

Online tests may need to be completed if the learner is working towards Maths and English qualifications.

E-Learning will be completed to work towards Personal Learning and Thinking Skills, Employee Rights and Responsibilities and any Maths and English required.
